The announcement is part of a range of measures being made by the Government to support teacher quality and supply. Two other announcements today include $5.2 million being committed to extend Teach First NZ and the lifting of a freeze on new initial teacher education programmes, which has been in place since 2000.
The mentoring and induction programme will be developed by the Education Council. It will apply to eligible teachers whose provisional certification has expired in the past 6 months, or will expire in the next 2 years.
Particular focus will be given to hard to staff subjects and locations, teachers working in Māori medium settings, teachers of the sciences, technology, maths and te reo Maori subjects, and teachers helping to backfill roles in Communities of Learning | Kāhui Ako. It is also likely to benefit part-time and short-term relievers who often don’t teach enough hours to be considered for current induction and mentoring programmes.
