Ko wai au? Who am I?  See my Voice? is a visual exhibition created by 6 deaf young Māori leaders and has been launched by the Ministry of Education. The exhibition tells the stories of Māori rangatahi who identify as Deaf or hard of hearing and is available in 3 languages Te Reo Māori, Sign and English. It is hoped that through the stories, schools and communities will have a better understanding of what it is like to be young, Deaf and Māori.

Participants of a research project undertaken by Victoria University, Kelston Deaf Education Centre and North Carolina State University in 2013 produced the exhibition. The research aimed to empower those who took part by telling their stories and helping them connect with their identity, language and culture. Research participants documented their lives using video, photos and written stories.

We have compiled the stories and photos from the exhibition into a booklet while the rangatahi video footage was compiled to create a snapshot of their lives. View the video of Ko wai au?  and order the booklet online.

If you are interested in displaying the full exhibition, please email hao.angitu@minedu.govt.nz.
