The app is an interactive digital storybook with synchronised text and audio in both Te Reo Māori and English, with the reader able to toggle between languages.
The app is also immersive in that it allows the student to follow along to the audio, or to swipe and read at their own pace. A user can also record themselves reading the story to replace the audio and have this listened to and reviewed.
There are also resources and activities to support the app.
Group Manager Te Reo Māori for the Ministry of Education, Kiritina Johnstone, said the app is now available in the App Store and Google Play.
“This is exciting. Using modern technology to tell yesterday’s stories,” said Kiritina.
The app is the latest in a series of Te Reo Māori materials created through Te Aho Ngārahu fund which focuses on localised stories into curriculum resources to support ākonga and kaiako.
Te Aho Ngārahu has supported the development of 80 new resources made to ensure that local NZ history and stories are a central part of all local curriculum.
